A SHORT HISTORY

DEBORAH LESSEN

I taught Graham technique full-time for 8 years before I met Carola, so I was already an experienced movement teacher. I came to realize that Pilates would be most effective if the aesthetics of dance or other movement forms were stripped away. I demanded this of my own body and then employed the same discipline in my teaching.I also recognized the necessity of preparing the body before jumping onto the apparatus so that the Pilates exercises were performed with the concepts of whole body organization, balanced muscle development, efficiency of energy and movement, precision and breath. I have developed a warm-up over many years that does just that. It enables a beginner to learn concepts immediately and then employ them in the choreography. In general, I am a big picture thinker, but the disipline of teaching Pilates has been a vehicle for personal as well as professional growth. I challenge myself every day to improve my skills and meet each new client and situation with the full force of my intelligence and experience. My reward is to observe my clients and colleagues move down their own paths with awareness and mindfulness.
